Jirongo served as Kenya’s Minister for Rural Development in 2002 under the administration of the late President Daniel Arap Moi. His political career spanned decades, representing the Lugari Constituency as MP from 1997 to 2002, and again from 2007 to 2013.

More recently, he was the United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate in the 2022 Kakamega gubernatorial election, ultimately losing to Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) Fernandes Barasa.

The news has sent shockwaves through the political community, with tributes beginning to pour in for the former KANU stalwart. Authorities are investigating the circumstances of the crash.
