Expect Heavy Rainfall, Storms and Extreme Temperatures if you’re from the following Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department has issued its weekly outlook, forecasting a week of potent and predictable weather patterns from December 16 to 22, 2025. The country is set to experience a dramatic split personality: intense afternoon thunderstorms will drench many regions, while stark contrasts between scorching days and chilly nights define the forecast.

The weather pattern is expected to be remarkably consistent throughout the week, with rainfall activity primarily firing up in the afternoons across much of the nation.

Regional Breakdown: Showers, Sun, and Sweltering Heat

Coastal Belt (Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, Kwale): Residents can expect a mix of sunny intervals by day and partly cloudy nights. However, showers are predicted to occur from morning through night across several areas throughout the week.

South-Eastern Lowlands & Inland (Machakos, Kitui, Kajiado, etc.): Cloudy mornings with occasional rains will give way to sunny breaks. The afternoons, however, are highlighted for showers and thunderstorms that may intensify and spread. Nighttime showers are also likely in scattered places.

Highlands East of the Rift Valley (Nairobi, Nyeri, Meru, Kiambu, etc.): The week begins with cloudy mornings and sporadic rainfall before sunny intervals break through. Afternoon showers are expected in several locations, with nights turning partly cloudy and a continued chance of rains.

Highlands West of the Rift Valley & Rift Valley (Kisumu, Nakuru, Kericho, Narok, etc.): This vast region, including the Lake Victoria Basin, will see sunny intervals in the mornings punctuated by occasional rainfall. Afternoon thunderstorm activity is forecast to be significant.

North-Western & North-Eastern Kenya (Turkana, Marsabit, Garissa, Wajir): These areas will largely experience sunny days and partly cloudy nights. Rainfall here will be more isolated, with a chance of morning or afternoon showers in a few places.

Extreme Temperature Warnings

Alongside the rain, Kenyans are advised to prepare for significant temperature extremes. The weatherman has warned of daytime maximums soaring above 30°C in the Coast, North-eastern, and North-western regions, as well as parts of the South-eastern lowlands and the Rift Valley.

In stark contrast, residents in the highland areas east and west of the Rift Valley, and near Mount Kilimanjaro, should brace for cold nights. Minimum temperatures are expected to plunge below 10°C, marking a sharp drop from the daytime heat experienced elsewhere.

The overall forecast paints a picture of a nation under the influence of a strong and stable weather system, driving reliable afternoon convection and reinforcing the classic climatic divides between Kenya’s diverse landscapes. Citizens are advised to plan for wet commutes in the late afternoons, stay hydrated in the lowland heat, and keep warm during the chilly highland nights.
