Bruno Fernandes Injury Mars Manchester United’s Defeat at Aston Villa

Manchester United’s clash with Aston Villa on Sunday was overshadowed by a significant injury blow, as captain Bruno Fernandes was forced off with a hamstring problem.
The midfielder appeared to pull up late in the first half at Villa Park and, despite playing until the break, was substituted at halftime. His absence was immediately felt as United eventually fell to a 2-1 defeat, with Morgan Rogers scoring twice for the hosts.
In a surprising tactical move, United manager Ruben Amorim brought on defender Lisandro Martinez to replace Fernandes, shifting to a defensive back-five formation with Martinez partnering Manuel Ugarte in midfield. The decision raised eyebrows, notably from former United defender Gary Neville.
“I am surprised because I thought [Joshua] Zirkzee would come on just because he is closer to Bruno’s position,” Neville commented during his match analysis.
The change did little to stem Villa’s momentum. Rogers restored Villa’s lead just ten minutes into the second half, securing all three points for the home side.
For United, the result is a setback in their top-four pursuit, but the greater concern is the fitness of their influential captain. Fernandes, known for his durability and consistent performances, was pictured returning to the bench in his coat, a clear sign his involvement was over.
The extent of the hamstring injury is yet to be confirmed, but his potential absence could not come at a worse time for Amorim’s side, who face a congested fixture list. With limited senior outfield options on the bench, United’s squad depth will be severely tested in the coming weeks.
