My Marriage Was Calm Until I Was Told Who Had Been Working Against Me Quietly

My name is Janet Wairimu, and I live in Rongai, Kajiado County, just along Magadi Road. I had been married to Stephen Wairimu, a civil servant working in Upper Hill, Nairobi, for nine years. Ours was not a perfect marriage, but it was calm. We talked, laughed, planned, and raised our two children, Brian and Shantel, in peace. People often told me I was lucky to have a quiet home, free from drama. I believed them.

The change did not come suddenly. It came like a slow shadow. Stephen became irritable for no clear reason. Small misunderstandings turned into cold silence. He stopped sharing things with me. Family dinners became tense. Even intimacy disappeared quietly, without arguments. I kept asking myself what I had done wrong, but there was no obvious mistake. Our home was calm—but heavy. Peaceful—but cold.

Relatives began noticing. My sister from Murang’a asked me why Stephen no longer attended family events. My mother said, “This is not how your marriage used to feel.” I defended him. I defended us. I told everyone marriages go through seasons. Deep inside, though, I felt like something invisible had entered our home.
