New Details Emerge in Investigation of Former MP’s Fatal Crash

Detectives have pieced together a clearer timeline of the moments leading up to the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, who was killed in a road accident along the Nakuru–Nairobi highway earlier this month. Newly obtained CCTV footage and eyewitness accounts are now central to the ongoing investigation.

Jirongo died from injuries sustained in the early hours of December 13, 2025, near the Karai area. According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), security cameras at the Eagol Petrol Station captured the former MP’s final movements before a public service bus, operated by Climax Company Ltd, collided head-on with his vehicle.

A Stopped Car, a Witnessed Tragedy

Further insight comes from a family who had stopped at the same petrol station just after midnight to refuel. In statements given to investigators, they reported seeing Jirongo leave the station moments before hearing a devastating crash.

The witnesses described then seeing a bus dragging the victim’s car along the road. A security guard at the station urgently asked the family to use their headlights to illuminate the wreckage as first responders worked at the scene. As traffic backed up, the family departed, only learning hours later that the victim was the former legislator.

Vehicle of Interest Traced to Local MCA

Investigators have also focused on a white Toyota Probox seen in the vicinity around the time of the incident. The vehicle was traced to its registered owner, William Mutai, the Member of County Assembly for Keringet Ward and Majority Leader of the Nakuru County Assembly.

DCI reports clarify that the car was not involved in the collision but was present as part of an unrelated journey. On December 11, Mutai’s wife had hired out the vehicle to Denis Kipyegon Koech, who was transporting relatives to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive a family member returning from the United States. The group had stopped at the Eagol station on their return trip, placing them at the location as unintentional witnesses.

DCI Vows Thorough, Impartial Probe

In a statement, the DCI emphasized its commitment to a transparent investigation. “The DCI is interrogating the veracity of all claims and reassures the family, friends, and the people of Kenya that thorough and impartial investigations into this incident are ongoing,” the agency said.

Authorities have promised to provide further updates as the inquiry continues. The case has drawn significant public attention, underscoring concerns over road safety on the busy highway corridor.

The late Cyrus Jirongo served as Lugari MP and remained a notable figure in Kenyan politics. His death has prompted an outpouring of condolences and calls for a conclusive investigation into the circumstances of the fatal crash.
