Weather Warning:Regions Where Heavy Rainfall and Strong Winds is Expected

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a weather advisory forecasting a weekend of significant rainfall, strong winds, and varied temperatures across much of the country, urging residents to prepare for wet conditions.
The department warns that occasional rainfall is expected over the southern half of Kenya, with intensity likely to increase as the weekend progresses. In Marsabit County, strong southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are anticipated over the next five days.
Regional Breakdown of Forecast
- Central Highlands & Eastern Areas: Residents in Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi counties should expect cloudy skies with light morning rain and sunny intervals, followed by afternoon and nighttime showers. Maximum temperatures are forecast to reach 29°C, dropping to lows of around 5°C. Similar conditions are predicted for Kitui, Makueni, Machakos, Kajiado, and Taita Taveta counties.
- Western & Rift Valley Regions: Counties including Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot are likely to experience rain both during the day and night, with temperatures ranging from 7°C to 32°C.
- Northeastern Arid Areas: Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties will have predominantly sunny intervals with highs of up to 37°C and lows of 16°C. Turkana and Samburu counties will see sunny days and partly cloudy nights, with temperatures between 16°C and 37°C.
- Coastal Strip: Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale counties, along with coastal parts of Tana River, will experience showers for most of the week, with a brief respite expected on Friday and Saturday morning and afternoon. Daytime highs may reach 34°C, with nighttime lows of 23°C.
The advisory comes as a reminder for Kenyans to remain vigilant, particularly in urban areas prone to flash flooding. The warning references previous flooding incidents in parts of Nairobi, such as Waiyaki Way and Parklands estate, underscoring the need for caution.
Major towns, including Kisumu, Nairobi, Kiambu, Nakuru, and Meru, are specifically highlighted as likely to experience rainfall from Friday, December 26, through Monday, December 29.
Residents are advised to stay updated on official weather bulletins, avoid driving through flooded areas, and take necessary precautions during this period of expected wet and windy weather.
