Police Officer Promoted After Rejecting $50,000 Bribery Attempt

In an act of remarkable integrity that has captured national admiration, Detective Sergeant Ruth Nyambe of the Zambia Police Service refused a staggering $50,000 bribe offered by a smuggling suspect at Kenneth Kaunda International Airport.

The incident unfolded after authorities intercepted a traveler from Lusaka found in possession of $2 million in cash and several pieces of suspected gold. Facing detention, the suspect first attempted to buy his freedom with a $5,000 offer to Nyambe. When she stood firm, he dramatically increased the bribe to $50,000—a life-changing sum equivalent to approximately 1.3 million Zambian Kwacha.

Without hesitation, Nyambe not only rejected the offer but also immediately reported the bribery attempt to the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC). Her swift action ensured the case was promptly escalated to the courts, preserving the integrity of the investigation.

“The amount offered could have turned many heads, but my duty to the nation and my conscience are not for sale,” Nyambe stated following the incident. “Upholding the law is a sacred responsibility.”

In recognition of her exemplary conduct and unshakeable ethical stance, the Zambia Police Service has promoted Detective Sergeant Nyambe. Her story has ignited a wave of pride across the country, with many citizens and public officials hailing her as a model of professionalism.

The DEC has commended Nyambe’s courage, noting that such acts of bribery are serious offenses that undermine the justice system. The smuggling suspect remains in custody as legal proceedings continue.

Nyambe’s steadfastness serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of integrity in law enforcement and has sparked conversations about supporting public servants who choose principle over personal gain.
