Our Neighborhood Was Dangerous and Violent, But Mr. Maina’s House Was Never Broken Into and Nothing Was Ever Stolen, It Was Strange Until We Finally Understood Why

Our neighborhood had a reputation no one was proud of. Break-ins were common. Fights would erupt in the middle of the night. Motorbikes disappeared from compounds. Electricity meters were vandalized. No one slept deeply because you never knew when the next scream or alarm would go off.
We had formed small security groups and installed metal gates, but still, thieves seemed to find a way in.
Yet in the middle of all this chaos stood Mr. Maina’s house.Untouched.Unbothered.Unshaken.
While the rest of us reinforced our doors and replaced stolen property, his home remained peaceful.
His gate was not stronger than ours. His walls were not higher. In fact, his compound looked simpler than many houses around. But strangely, thieves skipped his place every single time.
At first, we assumed coincidence.
Then we started noticing a pattern.
One night, three homes were broken into. Mine was one of them. Electronics gone. Kitchen appliances missing. Even my small savings box disappeared. The following morning, as neighbors gathered to share frustrations, we realized that once again, Mr. Maina’s house had been spared.
