Gachagua Claims Security Withdrawal Politically Motivated Amid Rising Tensions

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has publicly declared that his personal security detail has been withdrawn by the state, framing the move as a politically motivated attempt to undermine his influence ahead of future elections. The announcement, made on Monday, has ignited fresh debate over the intersection of personal safety, political seniority, and regional alignment in Kenya’s evolving political landscape.
Gachagua, who served as Deputy President until his removal from office, asserted that the withdrawal is both unjustified and dangerous. “I want to tell the people of Kenya that Rigathi Gachagua is not safe,” he stated, emphasizing that his national stature and the millions of supporters who remain behind him should guarantee continued state protection.
“Despite the fact that he was removed from office, he commands a serious following… hence he is a senior leader who deserves protection because of his seniority in public service and his key role in determining the next presidential election,” Gachagua argued, reading from a prepared statement.
A Strategic Move to Divide Mt. Kenya?
The former Deputy President linked the security decision to what he termed a “political fallout” with the current administration, centering on disagreements over the influential Mt. Kenya region. He alleged that the move is part of a broader strategy to weaken his political base by sowing division within the Mt. Kenya voting bloc.
“The alleged plan involves creating divisions within the Mt Kenya bloc to dilute its voting power in future elections,” Gachagua claimed. He elaborated that the tactic aims to “divide the mountain between Mt Kenya East and Mt Kenya West and sometimes telling Kiambu to get out of the mountain.”
Gachagua positioned himself as a unifying force in the region, suggesting that his efforts to promote cohesion have made him a target. He insisted that restoring his security is necessary not only for his personal safety but also as a recognition of his ongoing role in national affairs.
Contrasting Scenes in the Capital
The political drama unfolded against a starkly different backdrop in Nairobi’s Central Business District, where American streamer IShowSpeed caused a frenzy during an impromptu visit on Sunday. Hundreds of fans mobbed his convoy, with boda bodas and cars trailing behind, bringing parts of the CBD to a temporary standstill.
The contrast between the meticulously planned political maneuverings and the spontaneous, youth-driven fanfare highlighted Kenya’s complex contemporary narrative—where digital celebrity and grassroots political loyalty both command massive, albeit different, forms of influence.
Implications for the Political Landscape
Gachagua’s allegations touch on sensitive nerves within Kenyan politics, particularly regarding the treatment of former high-ranking officials and the delicate balance of power within the Mt. Kenya region, a key electoral battleground. His warning that the government is attempting to “dislodge” him from the region echoes ongoing tensions previously hinted at in public exchanges with President William Ruto.
Analysts suggest the security withdrawal, if confirmed, could escalate existing political rivalries and reframe debates about state resources, patronage, and protection. Gachagua’s decision to publicly frame the issue as one of safety, respect, and regional unity ensures it will resonate far beyond a simple administrative decision, potentially mobilizing his considerable support base.
The government has yet to issue an official response to Gachagua’s claims.
