I Got a Promotion in My New Job Two Weeks After Starting It After Five Years of Joblessness

Five years without a job can break a person slowly. At first, I was hopeful. I sent applications daily, attended interviews, and waited for calls that never came. As months turned into years, hope faded.

Friends moved on, some stopped picking my calls, and family gatherings became uncomfortable because the same question always came up: “Bado huna kazi?” Living without steady income affected everything.

I depended on small hustles and occasional help just to survive. My confidence dropped. I started doubting my skills, my value, and even my future. Sometimes I blamed the economy, sometimes I blamed myself.

Deep down, I felt stuck in a cycle I couldn’t explain. What hurt most was that I wasn’t lazy. I had qualifications and experience, yet doors remained closed. I prayed, fasted, and tried staying positive, but rejection followed me everywhere.

It reached a point where even applying for jobs felt exhausting because I expected disappointment. During one of those low moments, I had a long conversation with someone I trusted.
