“They Thought They Got Away!” Mpesa Agent Recovers Sh376,000 Stolen in Broad Daylight

It was a normal busy morning in Nyamira town.

Customers were lining up at Faith’s small Mpesa shop, sending school fees, withdrawing cash and paying bills. Business was good. She had just received fresh float of Sh376,000 to handle the day’s transactions.

Then two well dressed men walked in.

They looked calm. Polite. Ordinary.

One of them requested a large withdrawal. As Faith counted the money, the second man distracted her with questions about reversing a transaction. Within seconds, confusion filled the tiny shop.

When the dust settled, the two men had disappeared.

And so had Sh376,000.

Faith stood frozen. Her hands were shaking. Her heart was racing. She checked her drawer again and again, hoping it was a mistake.

It was not.

Panic and humiliation

Word spread quickly.

Neighbours gathered outside. Some blamed her. Others whispered that she had been careless. Faith broke down in tears.

“That money was not even mine,” she cried. “How will I explain?”

The financial pressure was unbearable. The fear of losing her business was even worse. Reporting to police was immediate, but deep down she felt hopeless.

The CCTV footage showed the faces clearly. But the suspects had already switched off their phones.

For two days, there was no progress.

Faith could not sleep. She kept replaying the moment in her mind, wishing she had been more alert.
