Tragedy in Mundika: Armed Robbers Kill M-Pesa Operator in Broad Daylight Runs away with huge amount of Money

Residents of Mundika trading centre in Busia County are today walking on eggshells following a daring daylight robbery that claimed the life of a young M-Pesa operator.

Ann, a lady in her prime who ran an M-Pesa shop within the busy Mundika market, was shot dead yesterday afternoon by armed robbers who stormed her business premises. The attackers, who were riding on a motorcycle, made away with Ksh 800,000 in cash before speeding off.

Police have launched a manhunt for the suspects, but locals say this is just one of many such incidents that have left the community living in fear.

Today, Mundika is silent. The usual hustle and bustle has been replaced by heavy hearts and tearful faces. Ann lies cold and alone at St. Francis mortuary, her family still struggling to come to terms with the sudden and violent loss of their loved one.

Family members who spoke to us described Ann as a hardworking and humble young woman who was simply trying to earn an honest living.

“All she did was serve her community. She was here every day, rain or shine, helping people send money to their families, pay bills, and survive. And this is how she is rewarded?” a close relative posed bitterly.

But beneath the grief lies a growing frustration. Armed robberies targeting M-Pesa outlets have become increasingly common within Busia County in recent days, and residents are now crying out for help.

Locals say the attackers have been emboldened, striking in broad daylight and escaping on motorcycles with impunity. Many are now questioning the effectiveness of security patrols in the area.

“We are sitting ducks,” one trader who asked not to be named told us. “These people come on bikes, do their thing, and vanish. We need the police to swing into action immediately before more innocent lives are lost.”

Police have assured members of the public that they are in hot pursuit of the suspects and have already launched investigations into the incident. However, residents are demanding more visible patrols and faster response times to prevent future attacks.

For now, Ann’s family is left to pick up the pieces, bury their daughter, and hope that justice will indeed be served.
