“He Was Waiting for Her”: Family Demands Justice as Bungoma Health Worker Fights for Life After Brutal Attack

A quiet evening in Wetaya Village has turned into a nightmare for a family in Bungoma County, who are now pleading for justice after their daughter, a 40-year-old public health officer, was left fighting for her life following a vicious attack by a man she trusted.
The victim, Marystella Kong’ani, a dedicated staff member at a Webuye County hospital, was ambushed and brutally assaulted on Wednesday night in what her family describes as a calculated act of violence.
According to Sandra Kong’ani, the 19-year-old niece of the victim, the terrifying ordeal unfolded just moments after Marystella returned home from work. “She arrived at around 9:00 p.m. I welcomed her in and served her supper,” Sandra recounted, her voice still shaken by the memory. Before the evening could carry on any further, a man known to her aunt stormed in.

A confrontation quickly escalated into a vicious assault that left the health worker with severe injuries. Neighbors, alerted by the commotion, rushed to the scene, but the assailant had already fled into the night.
Marystella was rushed to a nearby medical facility, where she was initially treated before being transferred in critical condition. Medical sources describe her injuries as severe, and she remains under intensive care as her family keeps a vigil by her bedside.
“We are seeking justice. This was not an accident; it was an attack by someone she knew,” a distraught family member said, speaking on behalf of the household in Khalaba Ward, Kanduyi Constituency.
Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the suspect, who remains at large. Police confirm that investigations are underway and have assured the family that every effort is being made to apprehend the fugitive.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the local community, with colleagues at the hospital where Marystella works expressing outrage and sorrow. Many describe her as a compassionate and hardworking officer who dedicated her life to serving others.
As the family awaits answers, they are calling on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to expedite the search for the attacker, insisting that justice must be served.
“She did not deserve this. No one does,” Sandra added. “We just want to see him behind bars so she can heal in peace.”
