REVEALED:Inside the Lavish ODM Convention Raising Eyebrows Across Kenya

The dust has settled on the lawns of Jamhuri Grounds following the Orange Democratic Movement’s (ODM) Special National Delegates Convention, but the hangover from the event is lingering in the corridors of political discourse. What was officially hailed as a show of unity is now facing intense scrutiny, with revelations of staggering financial expenditure that have left many questioning whether the party is losing its independence to the highest bidder.

While the party leadership celebrated a smooth process, insiders paint a picture of a meticulously choreographed political spectacle one that came with a price tag that has shocked even seasoned political observers. According to sources familiar with the logistics of the event, the cost of simply assembling the delegates ran into the tens of millions, a level of spending that has sparked a heated debate about the motivations behind the gathering.

The financial breakdown, as pieced together from insider accounts, is startling. Over 6,000 delegates were reportedly ferried to the capital from all corners of the country. The tab for this massive mobilization? An estimated Ksh 100 million.

The “transport and meals” allowances alone told a story of geographic hierarchy. Delegates from the party’s Nyanza stronghold were said to have pocketed as much as Ksh 25,000 each. Interestingly, those traveling from regions outside the traditional base received even more, with figures reaching up to Ksh 30,000 per person. Even delegates based in Nairobi, who didn’t have to travel far, did not leave empty-handed; they reportedly received Ksh 4,000 each for “facilitation.” For the majority of those in attendance, the consensus is that no one walked away with less than Ksh 10,000.

However, it is the reported intent behind this financial firepower that has truly set tongues wagging. Sources suggest that the generous handouts were not merely about ensuring attendance but were strategically aimed at reshaping the party’s internal power structure. The funding, it is alleged, was designed to smooth the path for installing officials friendly to President William Ruto’s United Democratic Alliance (UDA) party, signaling a potential political realignment that has unsettled long-time party members.

The choreography reportedly extended to who was allowed inside the venue. The notorious “Linda Mwananchi” faction, known for its rebellion against the current party leadership, found themselves physically blocked from accessing the grounds a clear message that defiance would not be tolerated, and a sign that dissent was being silenced by a combination of cash and coercion.

For many observers, the spectacle at Jamhuri Grounds has transcended the usual political gossip to raise a profound question: what is happening to the legacy of the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga? Once a symbol of fierce independence and populist resistance, the party he built now appears to be navigating a transactional relationship with the very administration it once opposed.

Critics argue that the lavish spending and political maneuvering suggest a party whose soul is up for grabs, prioritizing strategic gain over ideological consistency. As the country watches, the real cost of this convention may not be the Ksh 100 million spent, but the potential erosion of a political dynasty built over decades.
