“You Will Never Get Married,” My Neighbour Told Me — But What Happened Later Shocked Him

I grew up hearing people say that love and marriage would come naturally to everyone. I believed it too — until I became the woman everyone thought would never marry. It started subtly at first. People whispered about me, my looks, my personality, and even my family background. But the comment that changed everything came from someone I had known for years — my neighbour.
We had always been friendly, exchanging greetings and pleasantries whenever we met. One afternoon, while chatting near our gate, he looked at me in a way I had never seen before and said plainly, “You will never get married. No man will want you.”
At first, I laughed it off. I thought he was joking, or maybe just speaking out of frustration about his own life. But the words lingered in my mind. Over the next few days, I couldn’t stop replaying them. They were heavy, as if they carried more than just opinion — as if he had pronounced a verdict over my life.
I began to notice a pattern. Men I met would show interest briefly and then disappear. Friends would talk about their relationships and weddings while I remained single. Every social event, every introduction, felt like a reminder of what my neighbour had said. It was humiliating, frustrating, and emotionally draining.
Over time, the words began to affect my confidence. I doubted myself. I questioned my worth. I asked why, despite being educated, kind, and hardworking, I could not find a partner. I tried dating apps, introductions through friends, and social gatherings, but nothing worked. I started thinking maybe my neighbour was right — maybe I truly would never get married.
