Today 26th June 20224 at exactly 0800hr all eyes will turn to Paris as Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon steps into the track at stade Charlèty to chase a milestone that has never been achieved by any woman, the elusive sub four minutes mile.
The decorated middle distance runner is well known in writing history, in 2023 at the very same track in Paris she demolished the women’s 1,500 meters world record, clocking 3:49:04 but today she returns with the same fire but different target – to become the first ever woman to break four munite barrier in the mile.
The challenge which is dubbed Breaking 4 was announced by Kipyegon back in April and since then anticipation has been building in the athletics world.
With her signature humility and steely confidence, Kipyegon acknowledged the wait at the moment but also the significance of her message, she hopes that if Eliud Kipchoge’s sub two hour marathon in Vienna proved that no human is limited then her attempt will send a resounding message.
The Mile, a distance filled with history and symbolism has had only men break the four minutes wall since 1954 when it was first broken by Sir Roger Bannister, Faith Kipyegon currently holds the women’s mile world record at 4:07:64 that she set in Monaco back in 2023. She now needs to slash seven seconds off.
With the whole world watching, Kipyegon is not just chasing time, but rather a moment that will redefine the future generations of women in sports.
