Brian Otieno was earning KSh 30,000 a month at a customer service desk in Industrial Area when a single YouTube tutorial quietly redirected the entire course of his life. Six months later, he was invoicing clients more than his former boss made in a quarter.
At 24, Brian doesn’t own a car. He doesn’t have a degree. “People think you need to go to Nairobi CBD to make money,” he says, spinning in his chair. “Mimi niko hapa nyumbani — na pesa inakuja kwangu.” He laughs. It’s the laugh of someone who has earned the right to find the old world funny.

How It Started
It was a late night in March 2024 when Brian, exhausted after a double shift fielding angry customer calls, stumbled onto a YouTube channel by a Ugandan developer teaching WordPress for beginners. He watched one video. Then another. By 3am, he had downloaded XAMPP and was building his first local website on his aging Lenovo laptop.
“Sikuweza kulala,” he recalls. “Nilikuwa naona potential. For the first time in years, nilikuwa excited kuhusu kitu.” He didn’t tell anyone at work. He didn’t tell his parents. He gave himself 90 days. If he couldn’t land a paying client by then, he would stop and focus on climbing the corporate ladder. He landed his first client in 47 days — a small salon in Kasarani that needed a website to attract clients from Google. He charged KSh 15,000. The owner paid him in cash, in an envelope, on a Tuesday afternoon.
