Kenyan motorists and households received mixed news on fuel prices yesterday as the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced its latest monthly review, effective midnight August 14th.
In a statement released on Thursday, EPRA Director General Daniel Kiptoo revealed that pump prices for Super Petrol and Kerosene in Nairobi will each decrease by Ksh.1.00 per litre. However, the price of Diesel will remain unchanged for the coming month.
Revised Nairobi Prices (August 14 – September 14, 2025):
- Super Petrol: Ksh.185.31 per litre (down from Ksh.186.31 last month)
 - Diesel: Ksh.171.58 per litre (unchanged)
 - Kerosene: Ksh.155.58 per litre (down from Ksh.156.58 last month)

The adjustment reflects modest shifts in the global market. According to EPRA data, the average landed cost of imported fuel saw only slight changes between June and July 2025. International market movements showed:
- Super Petrol down 0.73% ($628.30 to $623.71 per cubic metre)
 - Diesel up 3.08% ($616.59 to $638.58 per cubic metre)
 - Kerosene up 3.20% ($608.54 to $628.02 per cubic metre)

Regional Price Variations:
EPRA also published the revised maximum retail prices for other major cities, effective immediately:
- Mombasa: Super Petrol Ksh.182.03, Diesel Ksh.168.30, Kerosene Ksh.152.29
 - Kisumu: Super Petrol Ksh.185.16, Diesel Ksh.171.78, Kerosene Ksh.155.83

Tax Component:
The regulator reiterated that all pump prices include the mandatory 16% Value Added Tax (VAT), applied in accordance with the Finance Act 2023 and the Tax Laws (Amendment) Act 2024. Additionally, the prices incorporate revised excise duty rates adjusted for inflation as stipulated in Legal Notice No. 194 of 2020.
The slight decrease in petrol and kerosene offers marginal relief to consumers, particularly households relying on kerosene for lighting and cooking. The stability in diesel prices is crucial for the transport and logistics sectors, though the international increase highlights underlying cost pressures.
Consumers can expect these fuel prices to remain in effect until the next EPRA review on September 14, 2025.
