The Kenya Meteorological Department has announced that rainfall will continue across several regions of the country, with some areas experiencing stronger rains than before.
According to the weatherman, moderate rain is expected in Western Kenya, North-Eastern Kenya, the South-Eastern Lowlands, the Coastal region, the Central Highlands, and the South Rift Valley. But the department says the highest intensity of rain will be felt in the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including the capital city, Nairobi.
“Rainfall is expected over several parts of the country with enhanced intensity over the Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi,” Kenya Met stated in a report released on Monday, April 13, 2026.
However, not everyone will be dealing with wet weather. The department has confirmed that Northwestern Kenya will mostly enjoy sunny intervals throughout this period.
Nairobi County Prepares for Heavy Rains
With the capital set to receive heavier downpours, Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja has updated the public on the measures being taken to protect lives and property across the city.
In an official statement issued on Friday night, March 6, 2026, Sakaja said that the Nairobi City County Disaster Management and Risk Department has fully mobilised all available resources and personnel to manage the situation.
The Governor confirmed that the Green Army and technical teams from the Mobility and Works sector have been deployed across all 17 sub-counties. Their job is to carry out emergency de-silting of drains and clearing of waterways to prevent flooding.
The county is also working closely with the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) and the Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) to ensure that major roads remain passable.
Sakaja added that all KURA contractors have been directed to be on the ground immediately to carry out urgent mitigation work along their corridors. This includes opening blocked drains, removing fallen trees, and clearing debris to keep both motorists and pedestrians safe.
