Fuel Price Storm: Gachagua’s Explosive “Ksh 30 Billion Scandal” Claim

President William Ruto has broken his silence on the rising fuel prices, insisting that his government is protecting ordinary Kenyans. Speaking on Wednesday, the President acknowledged that there is trouble in the Middle East, but said his administration has stepped in with a fuel subsidy to ensure that the high costs do not reach the common citizen.

“Tuko na shida kule Middle East… tumehakikisha ya kwamba tumefanya subsidi ya mafuta ndio hiyo gharama ya juu isifikie mwananchi wa kawaida,” Ruto said.

But while the President was making that promise, his former deputy was busy dropping what he called a bombshell.

Gachagua’s Explosive Allegations

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua claims that Kenyans are being cheated on a massive scale. He says the country is watching one of the biggest fuel scandals in its history unfold right now.

According to Gachagua, the entire energy sector has been turned into a criminal enterprise under President Ruto’s watch. He alleges that on the night of April 5th and 6th, 2026, Ruto sent a powerful team to Dubai. The group included Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi, the acting CEO of EPRA Joseph Oketch, and other officials. They went together with Gulf Energy to renegotiate fuel prices with international oil companies.

Gachagua says this is the real reason why CS Wandayi was missing when Parliament wanted to question him.

Who Is Behind the Scandal?

The former DP did not stop there. He named names. According to him, three international companies that supply fuel through a government-to-government deal work with six local oil marketing companies. But he says the public was never told who the real masterminds are.

Gachagua listed President Ruto, Chief of Staff Felix Koskei, and CS Wandayi as the team leaders of what he called a fuel scandal.

He further claimed that after the recent price increase, Ruto is making an extra Ksh 5 per litre. With an estimated 500 million litres supplied every month for regional consumption, that adds up to about Ksh 2.5 billion in just one month.

And the bigger picture? Gachagua says since the G2G arrangement started, William Ruto has pocketed a cool Ksh 30 billion in profits from supplying petroleum products to the region.

Demand for Resignations

Gachagua is now demanding action. He wants CS Wandayi to resign immediately and face prosecution for the fuel scandal and for lying under oath before a National Assembly Committee on April 13th, 2026. He also wants CS Lee Kinyanjui to step down, accusing him of being complicit in the whole affair.

So far, the government has not responded to these specific claims. But with Ruto promising a subsidy on one hand and his former deputy alleging massive theft on the other, Kenyans are left watching and wondering who is telling the truth.
