Australian football star Sam Kerr has shared her thoughts on being in Kenya, and she’s full of praise for the warmth she’s received.
Speaking during a Matildas press conference ahead of their upcoming matches, the Chelsea and Australia captain said the best part of the trip so far has been the locals.
“Everyone has been so welcoming, so nice, so helpful,” Kerr said.
She added that seeing Kenyan football fans show up with Chelsea and Arsenal shirts at the stadium was exciting. According to her, it shows just how much people here love club football. “It’s been a very nice reception,” she said.
Kerr also made it clear that her team is not taking any opponent lightly, including Kenya.
She explained that no matter who they face or where that team is ranked in the world, Australia always aims to play at their best level.
“Playing for the national team is something we don’t take for granted,” she said. “Every game we come, we prepare the same, we train the same, the seriousness is the same.”
Kerr admitted she feels lucky to have played many times for her country. But she pointed out that for some players, this might be their first training camp with the national team. That’s why the senior players have a duty to set the right standard.
“We don’t take any team lightly,” she stressed. “We don’t come to training and joke around. We prepare exactly the same.”
She revealed that the team does just as many video sessions on Kenya and Malawi as they would for top sides like the USA or England. “This is our job. We’re professionals, and we treat every game the same,” Kerr said.
