Kericho Governor Erick Mutai Impeached for Second Time in Chaotic County Assembly Vote.

Kericho Governor Erick Mutai has been dramatically impeached for the second time in his tenure, following a volatile session of the County Assembly on Friday, August 15th.

In a decisive electronic vote, 33 out of 47 Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted in favor of removing Mutai from office. This result comfortably surpassed the required two-thirds majority, marking a stark contrast to his previous impeachment attempt. The motion, moved by Sigowet MCA Kiprotich Rogony, accused the Governor of gross violation of the Constitution, abuse of office, and mismanagement of county resources.

The special sitting was reportedly marked by intense debate. Governor Mutai attended the session, flanked by his legal team led by prominent lawyer Katwa Kigen. Kigen’s attempt to compel a roll-call vote was denied by the Assembly Speaker. Immediately after the Speaker confirmed the impeachment result, chaos erupted within the Assembly chamber, though specific details of the disturbances are still emerging.

This impeachment represents a significant escalation in the political battle surrounding Mutai. His first impeachment attempt ultimately failed when he was saved by the Senate, despite 31 MCAs voting against him at the county level. The overwhelming 33-14 vote this time signals significantly stronger opposition within the County Assembly.

What Happens Next?

The impeachment process now moves to the Senate. Governor Mutai will have the opportunity to appear before the Senate to defend himself against the serious charges levied by the MCAs. The Senate’s decision is final and binding:

  • If the Senate confirms the impeachment: Governor Mutai will be permanently removed from office.
  • If the Senate rejects the impeachment: Mutai will be reinstated and remain in his position as Governor of Kericho County.

The outcome now rests with the Senate, leaving Kericho County in a state of political suspense as it awaits the next chapter in this high-stakes saga. The charges of constitutional violations, abuse of power, and financial mismanagement ensure the Senate’s deliberations will be closely watched across Kenya.
