In a move that significantly shakes up the political landscape, former Chief Justice David Kenani Maraga has officially declared his intention to run for President in the 2027 general elections. He will be seeking the nation’s top office through the United Green Movement (UGM) party, aiming to succeed incumbent President William Ruto.
The announcement was made during his formal unveiling at the party’s headquarters, Green Action House, in Nairobi. The retired senior judge stated that he has accepted the call to lead the party and will immediately begin the task of popularizing and strengthening UGM across the country.
A Partnership of Principle
In his address, Maraga emphasized that his decision was driven by a shared vision with the party.
“I accepted the call to join this party because it aligns with my personal principles and ideologies on a wide range of matters,” Maraga stated. “This includes matters on the rule of law, respect for human rights, and democratic governance, among others.”
He further committed to a mission of national restoration, adding, “I have committed to building and restoring the dignity of Kenyans as well as protecting our human rights.”
Building a Coalition for Victory
Maraga has pledged not only to clinch the presidency but also to ensure that UGM secures a majority of parliamentary seats in the next elections. This signals a strategic push to build a formidable political force capable of forming the next government.
The United Green Movement is associated with politician Neto Agostinho, who serves as its co-party leader. The party’s history dates back to when Agostinho defected from the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM). Agostinho himself has a political track record, having been elected as the Member of Parliament for Ndhiwa Constituency on an ODM ticket in a 2012 by-election, serving until 2017.
Rallying a New Generation
Maraga appears to be strategically courting a key demographic: the youth. He has been actively rallying support from Kenyans, with a particular focus on Gen Z. His involvement with UGM has been visible, including active attendance at the party’s events. Most recently, he was in Kwale County in June for the official launch of the UGM’s county office, underscoring his and the party’s national outreach efforts.
This entry of a former head of the judiciary, renowned for his role in the landmark nullification of the 2017 presidential election, introduces a formidable and principled contender into the race, setting the stage for a highly competitive and issues-based campaign ahead of 2027.
