Several passengers on a 50-seater bus have had the scare of their lives after the vehicle suddenly burst into flames while traveling along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa highway on Friday morning. The incident happened in Voi, Taita Taveta County, on September 4th, leaving travelers shocked but fortunately unharmed.
The drama unfolded when two of the bus’s rear tyres reportedly burst, triggering a chain reaction that led to the vehicle catching fire. Passengers quickly realized something was terribly wrong and managed to evacuate the bus safely before the flames could trap anyone inside. What started as a mechanical failure quickly turned into a disaster as the fire spread rapidly through the vehicle.
The bus was completely consumed by the inferno within minutes. By the time emergency responders arrived at the scene with a water truck and traffic police officers managed to extinguish the flames, there was very little left to save. The vehicle had been reduced to just a skeletal frame of twisted metal, a stark reminder of how intense the fire had been. The damage was so extensive that the bus is beyond any hope of repair.
According to eyewitnesses present at the scene, the driver was actually inside the vehicle when the tyres burst and didn’t immediately realize what was happening. He only noticed the danger moments later when he spotted the fire spreading rapidly. Without hesitation, he scrambled to safety just as the situation was spiraling out of control. Fortunately, the quick thinking of the driver and passengers ensured that everyone got out safely.
The incident has once again raised concerns about vehicle maintenance and safety on Kenya’s highways. Experts point out that fires involving long-distance buses and trailers are often linked to mechanical failures that could have been prevented. Common culprits include overheating brakes, electrical faults, fuel leaks, and inadequate vehicle maintenance, particularly during long journeys. Adding to the troubling trend, this incident came just a day after another fire incident on Thursday, September 3rd. A long-distance trailer heading to Uganda had also caught fire in the Kipsitet area near Moi Girls Kipsiget in Kericho County along the Kericho-Kisumu Highway. The fire had consumed the entire front section of that trailer, leaving behind a mangled wreck. The exact cause of that fire is still being investigated.
As investigations into Friday’s bus fire continue, transport companies and drivers are being urged to prioritize regular vehicle maintenance and safety inspections. Passengers too are reminded to travel with operators who maintain their vehicles properly and follow all safety regulations. While Friday’s incident could have ended in tragedy, the quick evacuation prevented what could have been a massive loss of life on the highway.
