Police Launch Investigation After 14 Bodies Allegedly Buried in Single Grave at Kericho Cemetery
A disturbing report of a suspected mass burial has prompted an immediate investigation by the National Police Service after two gravediggers claimed they witnessed a white Land Cruiser ferry about 14 bodies into Kericho’s Makaburini Cemetery under cover of darkness Tuesday night.
The two young men, who work as grave diggers at the cemetery, walked into Makaburini Police Station to file a report that has since sent investigators scrambling to piece together what exactly unfolded on the grounds they tend by day.
According to their account, the bodies—some of which they described as mutilated—were already sealed in body bags when the vehicle arrived. What struck them as highly unusual, they told police, was that all 14 were lowered into a single grave.
Police have since cordoned off the scene, treating the area as a potential crime scene while forensic teams work to verify the claims.
In a press statement released Saturday, the National Police Service confirmed that officers in Kericho County moved swiftly to secure the location and preserve any evidence that may still be intact.
“The National Police Service assures the public that this matter is being handled with the utmost seriousness and will be conducted professionally and transparently to ascertain the facts surrounding this incident,” the statement from spokesperson Michiri Nyaga read.
Investigators say some witnesses have already recorded statements, and efforts are ongoing to track down other individuals who may have information about the alleged burial.
For now, authorities are urging Kenyans to hold off on speculation as detectives work to separate fact from rumor. The scene remains under police guard, and officials say updates will be issued as the investigation moves forward.
