At least several civilians are dead and around 30 others have been taken by force in a fresh attack blamed on ADF rebels in the Mambasa region of Ituri, in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.
Local sources say the assault left the community in shock. Some of those who were kidnapped managed to escape during the chaos. They have since told authorities that armed groups are now moving through villages close to the area, raising fears of more violence.
The Congolese army has confirmed that military operations against the rebels are continuing. Troops are currently searching the forests around Mambasa, trying to track down the fighters and rescue those still in captivity.
Community activists are now urging residents to stay very alert. They are asking people to report any suspicious movements and to cooperate fully with security forces. The army has also called on locals to work together with soldiers who are carrying out the ongoing manhunt in the dense woods.
The ADF, which has been active in eastern DRC for years, is known for carrying out deadly raids on villages, often killing men and abducting women and children for ransom or forced labour.
