Bungoma Governor Kenneth Lusaka has shocked many people by firing all members of his County Executive Committee, the County Attorney, and the County Secretary. The decision took effect immediately on Thursday, April 9, 2026.
According to a press release from the Governor’s office, the move is meant to improve how the county government runs and to protect the integrity of its institutions. The Governor said the decision was made in good faith and in the broader public interest.
This mass firing did not come out of nowhere. Reports indicate that Members of the County Assembly had already prepared an impeachment motion against some of the county officials. While the Governor did not directly mention the impeachment threat in his statement, the timing suggests the two events are connected.
The Governor thanked the affected officers for their service but made it clear that changes were necessary for effective governance. Section 40(1)(a) of the County Government Act gives the Governor the power to make such changes. The law allows a county governor to dismiss members of the executive committee when necessary.
For now, it is not clear who will take over the key roles or how long the interim arrangements will last. The Governor promised that further communication would be made in due course, following the law and due process.
