Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has made a direct appeal to leaders and residents from the Mt. Kenya region, asking them to set aside any succession ambitions for now and rally behind President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
Speaking Monday at his home in Irunduni, Tharaka Nithi County, Kindiki hosted a delegation of grassroots leaders and professionals from Maara Constituency. He argued that the region’s best political strategy is to first secure Ruto’s re-election, then position itself for the presidency in 2032.
“We have no option next year but to reelect President Ruto. A cow that is heavy with a calf cannot be slaughtered,” Kindiki said. “After the re-election of President Ruto next year, we will only wait for five years. Then in 2032, the calf will be born.”
The DP dismissed what he called misleading advice from some politicians who want the region to back a different candidate in 2027. He warned that such a move could leave Mt. Kenya waiting for ten years or more before getting a chance to produce a president.
“Some people are busy telling us to kick out William Ruto next year, then wait for another ten years. Is it not easier and more strategic for our people to wait for five years than to wait for ten? We are sharp people. We know how to make political calculations,” he added.
Kindiki also justified the government’s development record in the region, saying their support for Ruto is not blind loyalty but a response to tangible projects. He singled out the construction of the new Nithi Bridge as a key promise being fulfilled.
On the same bridge, the DP called on residents to be patient, revealing that the project had faced delays because the design had to be reworked to meet expectations. He also noted that the government had to wait for the National Lands Commission to be reconstituted, since the commission handles land acquisition and compensation.
“We have the money. We have a contractor,” Kindiki assured. He added that the new bridge will be one of the longest in Kenya — second only to the Dongo Kundu bridge in Mombasa. He said it will help reduce deadly accidents along that dangerous section of the road.
“Demonstrations will not be of any help because this is a promise we made, and I will ensure it is constructed,” the DP said, urging locals to remain patient.
